Installation of a new printer driver goes very slow, or is not possible at all.

It is possible that too many drivers have been installed on your system, or different versions of the same driver. Remove all printer drivers, orphan files OEM files with the deleter tool. Remove the registry entries (back up registry first!). You can leave the ports. After removal, re-install only the drivers you need.
